What is Environmental Club?

Unity Point Environmental Club (UPEC) is a student led club sponsored by Mrs. Melanie Spears. Students that are in 4th grade may apply to be part of the UPEC. Our mission is to learn more about environmental issues, participate in community service while helping the environment, and to promote environmental awareness at school, home, and beyond.

  • The vaquita is the most endangered marine mammal, with an estimated population of about 10 individuals.
  • The primary threat to the vaquita is illegal gillnet fishing.
  • The vaquita in the porpoise family.
  • The name "vaquita" means "little cow" in Spanish.
  • Vaquitas are dark gray with black markings around their eyes and lips. They have round heads and a large dorsal fin compared to other porpoises.
  • Vaquitas are the smallest cetaceans — the group that includes dolphins, porpoises and whales — at 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) long and 65 – 120 pounds (29.5 to 54.4 kg).
  • Vaquitas feed on shrimp, small fish, squid and octopuses.
